whoa . . .I was a little skeptical of the Dogme rules in general as I sat down to watch Celebration. Hand-held cameras can certainly give someone a headache and sometimes those realism films can just draaaag.
However, I was immediately drawn into the characters. Each one seemed more twisted internally. The whole slowness of the beginning with its facades of pleasantries and cheerful hellos just created a luscious tension. There was obviously an explosion waiting to happen.
And it did . . . this film peaks like fireworks, there is a bang and then a hush and then a bang and then a hush, and when it's all over your eyes are still seeing spots of color. It's wonderful.
The cinematography was unique and very creative considering the restrictions. The characters were all very complex and varied enough to give it spice. But the writing . . . the writing was just brilliant.
From the moment the twin brother drops his bomb on an unsuspecting dinner party, the anxiety builds, and your attention is completely caught up in this whole tangled affair.A must see for all film lovers.
