"Christian Slater in Armani suits. Mmmm mmm good."
Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater. Who knew the boys could pull it off? Not that this is academy level acting, but they do a fine job. And hot damn is Gary Oldman evil.I think he may just end up giving Christopher Walken a run for his money.
Needless to specify. Gary Oldman is the villain in this one. he plays warden of Alcatraz. Kevin Bacon is the ultimate 90s hero: the victim. The poor, innocent, abused victim. Poor Kevin Bacon. Christian Slater is the young upstart lawyer. In armani. As an evil bitch, I honestly wish I could say he was upstages by his suits, but that's just not true. If nothing else, Slater can do the ingenue.
Summary: Bacon is a petty criminal in Alcatraz. Some years ago, he attempts to escape. Thus he is given a life sentence. However, because Gary Oldman is one evil motherfucker, he gets mutilated and put in solitary for like, 100 years. When he gets out, he kills some guy with a spoon (they don't have sporks at Alcatraz)
Slater is awarded what apperas to be an open shut murder case. However, he's young and idealistic and blah blah blah, he decides to expose the abuse in Alcatraz.
This movie is quite well written, if standard and simple. The direction is very nice. Stylized to a degree, but not too much so. Understated, yet artistic. I liked.
Story is heartwrenching drama. A wee bit overdone, prehaps. But the message is a good one. Human rights and all that rot. Abuse of power. You know, stuff worth fighting for. Oh, and getting the prisoner a whore! Yeah! Sex is on of the undenialable human rights, correct? It should be. I say we ammend the constitution. "Freedom, jusitce, the pursuit of happiness, and get mah GROOVE on"
I think it'll be pretty hit or miss. You'll either go all righteous like I did or get bored and pissy "yeah yeah yeah he was mistreated I don't care..."I should hope everyone is like me and would get all into the pursuit of justice. But I should be realistic. No one is like me. 4 sporks, and people, that's my humble opinion.
