C'mon, how has this film not been reviewed? How can a movie that makes the Sixth Sense's deliberate pacing and editing seem like 'Armageddon' not have one single HBS reviewers marking's on it? That has to change. Now. This one of my favorite films of all time. Here's why.Nicholson, despite critics, does an awesome job here. Call it ham all you like ( your day is coming you bitches!) but his acting was raw, and real, albeit scary as hell. The script, adapted from the less scary but better novel by Stephen King, twists us into a world of insanity that mounts higher as the snow blows harder.
The sheer genius of this movie is how Kubrick slows it down to a standstill. Uneasiness sets into your pores and you're left wondering what the hell is gonna happen next. The kid isn't that bad and an actor and though Shelly Duvall does indeed suck my balls, she could not ruin this movie for me. it was far too well made.
Unlike some other directors, Kubrick knew how to do art without endless streams of metaphors. His films spoke for themselves. The Shining, in eyes, is only beaten by a Clockwork Orange in terms of Stanley's acute sense of direction. He needed more scripts such as these to really get him going and it's apparent in his films. Human depravity is a marvelous thing to watch on screen. I think I'll go do it again.Watch it. And I swear to God, if you tell me you're not scared by this film, we'll shoot a shotgun by your head, see if you jump then, okay? Loser.
