Gerard Depardieu is a bank robber recently released from prison and determined to go straight. When a trip to the bank is interupted by a moron robbing the joint and taking Gerard hostage, his life isn't exactly going how he planned. When Gerard is mistakenly assumed to be the thief and the duo are hunted by the cops, the moron's mute daughter comes into play and Gerard, rather than fight for his innocence, fights for the girl's safety.

It's kind of odd to watch Depardieu strut around this flick as the quintessential 80's French sex symbol, complete with monster belly. He's good at what he does, but you could see this was the beginning of the aging process that would take him from France's darling to older character actor who can do the accent.

The story is well-conceived and well played out. It's a charming enough film that still has effect some fifteen years after it's initial release. All of the high points of this film were transported to the remake, but there's many more that never made the Hollywood cut, so do yourself a favor and find this first. Or instead.
