Ahhh the 70's. Things seemed so innocent and free back then - and that's when "Rocky Horror" came along. With the 60's freedom gone and societal pressures heading into conservatism again, 'Rocky' seemed like a celebration about everything taboo - especially the always touchy subjects of sex and sexuality.Today even my friends six year old daughter knows the difference between a transvestite and a trans-sexual so the impact these days is kind of lost. Still, the film holds up pretty well thanks to some truly great performances by actors who are now household names, whilst the dance numbers (although a bit on the daggy side) are set to some great songs.
The plot is barely existant and a few of the quieter scenes feel strained, but they're just excuses to hold the songs together. Its twisted, high camp, gender-bending fun with a dash of the macarbre and the whimsical.
While I quite like it, its certainly a long way from my 'Top 100' list, nevertheless I can see and appreciate why people love it so much. Not only does it never take itself seriously, it also makes the audience not take itself seriously either. Its a film which tells you to throw off your inhibitions - f**k what anyone else thinks, kick off your shoes and have fun.
