"John Woo kicks ass, old skool style"
4 stars

This is where it is at, baby! Long coats, two gunned ballistic ballet... Heroic bloodshed at its most bloody...

Frankly any exposition of plot is completely unnecessary, but suffice it to say that for Ho and Mark (all bow down before the alter of Chow Yun Fat) retiring from a life of counterfeiting crime is proving to be troublesome, particularly as Ho's policeman younger brother Kit is looking to cause trouble with their former gang chums.

A Better Tomorrow starts relatively slowly, but the typical HK penchant for syrupy sentiment is regularly spiced up with unbelievably violent bloodshed and mayhem as Ho and Mark are double- and triple-crossed by various shady and ungrateful criminal types. As the owner of Universal taxi Company says: "Once you're in, it's very hard to get out", and he wasn't talking about Dolly Parton's cleavage.

The film culminates in a spectacular dockside shoot out that fully demonstrates that you should never equip your evil minions with machine guns as they are very inaccurate weapons in the hands of baddies... in Ho and Mark's hands, however, they are deadly accurate, and never need reloading! Oooh yeaaah! And so, after carving up two-thirds of the criminal population of Kowloon, Mark is felled by the villainous Shing, Ho and brother Kit make it up and cap his evil ass and mirth and merriment reign.

Huzzah for Hong Kong Cinema!

Guns, more guns, and explosions, all done with the utmost cool. This is an awesome film. And as for Part 2....
