***************************
Bananas. Early Woody Allen entry about a loser product-tester who is sent to a South American country and turned into the country’s dictator. Scripted by Allen and Mickey Rose, Bananas is actually pretty empty, amounting to little more than a redundancy of pranks and pratfalls. It is easy to see how Allen established himself from the beginning as the gagmeister, but the format of interweaving what little storytelling there is along with stand-up routines, is an unfulfilling one. There are some glimpses of what Allen is capable of—his own cross-examination, the play-by-play newscast of the consummation coitus—but the overwhelming majority of the gags fall flat after slipping on the peel, leaving this quickie-comedy laying suppine on the floor.

With the enjoyable Louise Lasser and a cameo by Sylvester Stallone.

Final Verdict: D-.
