Fools Rush In is the latest film from the director of It Takes Two. Perry (from the TV sitcom Friends) plays Alex Whitman, a straight laced, suit-and-tie corporate climber who meets sexy Latino Isabel Fuentes (Hayek from Desperado) outside a crowded toilet in a Las Vegas restaurant. After a passionate one night stand (inspired by the toilet queue perhaps) Isabel discovers she is pregnant and believes it her duty to tell Alex she is having the baby. At first Alex reacts with all the calm and sensibility of a rabid puppy dog but eventually the two discover a spark of magic, and on a whim they decide to get married in a cheap and nasty ceremony with Elvis as their only witness.
Conflict inevitably arises as the married couple get to know each other and realise exactly what they've got themselves into. The best thing about this film is the soundtrack of Elvis Presley songs and the cinematography of huge canyons in the Las Vegas desert. The worst thing is that the vacuous quality of the landscape is a perfect reflection of the empty and uninspiring performances of all the actors involved.
Perry's pitiful inability to step outside of his Friends character and adopt his performance to the big screen makes the film feel like a poor Mexican sitcom - minus the humour. Hayek's contrived attempt at acting is equally flat and embarrassing. This striking lack of screen chemistry between the two leads leaves you feeling that you could care less about the characters or the story's eventually predictable outcome. To be honest, you'd be a fool to rush out and see this one. You'd
probably get more laughs out of a take-away nachos and a Wall Street Journal. ---Melissa Bollinger
