"A two part episode minus the paranoia killing commercials"
If you're watching this movie and hoping for major revelations in the plot, you're going to be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're an X-File addict who loves anything Mulder and Scully, this is for you.I remember when I first heard rumors about an X-File movie. It was during a messy time in the show's production. David Duchovny's ego was beginning to inflate faster than the national debt and he was threatening to quit, leaving the show stuck up shit creek. So at the time, this movie looked like it would have major importance, essentially being a vehicle to wrap the past half dozen years up.
Well, David got his way and the show moved from Vancouver to LA (nice for Dave, shitty for the show) and he agreed to stick around a little longer. Unfortunately the wheels of production had already been grinding on the film, and instead of a profound ending to one of the most influential television shows in some time, we got stuck with a 2 hour episode on a larger screen. Not that I'm complaining, but it could have been handled in a more interesting way.
The plot basically revolves around the main X-Files conspiracy that several high-ranking government members are working with an alien race to take over the planet in order to save their own butts. However, things go awry and hilarity ensues.
It's got a couple decent effects, but if they had been cut out, and the budget pared down, it would have been remembered as one of the great episodes rather than a so-so movie. As usual, the performances are extremely good. One thing that can be said about Chris Carter (no, not that he's apparently a one hit wonder) is that he knows a good actor when he sees one. I don't think there is anyone in the film who I found to be over the top or just plain bad.If you're an X-File nut, you'll probably like this and find it to be a lot of fun. Anyone else will probably find it to be just an average film and be left with lots of questions about what was going on. It set up the following season for the show, but beyond that it's nothing special like it should have been.
