Thank you god. Thank you oh Lord, for convincing Brad Pitt there was more to acting than combing his hair and standing around looking pretty. Who would have thought the man who brought us Legends of the Fall could have actually contributed positively to this movie. And he really does. But first, I think you all deserve a plot summary. But only because you've been so good.
Bruce Willis lives in the future. In some sort of post apocalyptic world, where people live underground (this is SO my kind of movie). He visits the surface in a cool suit and everything. We learn that a virus forced people underground. And to defeat the disease, the powers that be (scary scientists who evoke Big Brother) send Bruce back in time. He's searching for the source of the virus. Stuff happens, and time is all out of whack in this flick, but we don't lose track of the plot, which is a good thing. Madeline Stowe shows up and they all fall in love and stuff but who cares. Is he gunna save humanity or not?!
Brad is a fantastic supporting character. He does a great job. Yay Brad. Isn't actually acting fun? Bruce is actually branching out a little in this one. I mean yeah, he's still saving the world, but he doesn't use a gun this time! And he's a very compelling leading man. Yay Bruce. Isn't it fun to rely on acting and not special effects for once? Madeline Stowe bites. Well, she bothers me. Her character doesn't really make a lot of sense. Pick one. Be the scientific skeptic, or be the wanton, easily seduced idiot woman. You can't be both. 'Cause you can't pull off being both. But she doesn't distract from the important part of this movie, namely plot. A great piece of writing really well executed. This movie is one fine piece of work. It's great because it's not entirely mindless. However, it's still very entertaining. Hollywood should make more cool flicks like this. And having a message about apocalypse nuts and our future as a people isn't all bad. C'mon! It's BRUCE. How deep can it be? 5 sporks.
