"Bah. At least there are succeful versions of this available."
"My only love sprung from my only hate.
The Classic Love Story Set in Our Time." <--that pretty much sums up the wrongness of this movie.Don't get me wrong. I believe Shakespear is largely timeless. But if you're gunna update it, do it right. And no matter how you coolify it, it's still shakespear, so teenyboppers are gunna be bored. ESPECIALLY if you leave the text intact. I love Leo and all, but even *I* know most teeny boppers, no matter HOW enamoured, will tire of Elizabethan speech.
I have to come clean. I was looking forward to this movie, I love teh Shakes man, I love Leo, I love Claire, I love Jamie Kennedy, I was all happy. Did I enjoy the experience? No. Not only did I find the movie seriously lacking, my movie experience was consistently disrupted by bored teeny boppers talking, moving, or otherwise being stupid pissants. I believe that the goal of this movie, to entertain a fairly specific demographic, was a boneheaded idea. But let's move on because I'm not nearly done.
Where to start where to start. Well, let's start with the positive. The costuming was awe inspiring. And this is the only movie in which Leguizamo doesn't piss me off. And it ends there.
The negative. Besides being a boneheaded premise, I don't even feel it was executed that well. I understand that the director was going for a modern, edgy, fastpaced, wild ride of a movie. But why? Again, boneheaded concept that should never have gotten past the pitch stage. Shakepearian language is not meant to be spoekn or manipulated like that. The speeding up of film at various moments is pointless and just ads to the muddled, sloppy feel of the thing.
The acting is not without merits, but it so overshadowed by everything else, it wouldn't make a difference one way or another. The set design is stupid and distracting, as is the soundtrack. It's a shame such a great piece of literature had to be butchered and ruined for so many young souls. 2 stars.
