"Will Somebody Please Shoot Joel Schumacher !!!!!!"

|
With Nic Cage giving one of the worst performances of his long &
somewhat illustrious career (yes it's worse than Snake Eyes)and
scripting and directing that beggar belief, here fellow movieholics is a review of 8MM.With a wife like his is in 8MM you'd be forgiven for thinking that Nic Cage would be glad to get away from her for a while (I know I sure as hell would be), when he is called away to investigate an apparent "snuff film" (urban legend or not it's a great premise) with little to go on Nic of course manages the impossible and not only finds out who the runaway girl in the snuff film is, but also manages to locate the director of the film, the star (read killer) of the film, the gaffer the .... (well you get the drift) with his type of skill you think he'd be more adept at reading people (and film scripts).
But that's not what this complete piece of bile is all about it's more about a man trying to be able to be happy with himself and accept what he is without influences from surrounding criteria, what this film manages to do is reduce this premise to the merest whiff of what it could have been and ends up, not only seemingly glorifying the violence it PRETENDS to be condemning, but also taking a great deal of pleasure in making sure we know that badguys always get their comeuppance, no matter that this reduces our "hero" to the role of cold blodded murderer in the process.
The scene where Cage is on the phone to the mother of the murdered girl has to be one of THE most disgusting scenes I have ever had the misfortune to witness, are we supposed to accept that because the mother loved her daughter, and gives her ok to the killing of the bad guys, that we are now supposed to look on Cage as the "hero" of the piece, I think not, this film has nowhere near enough substance for us to be able to feel anything but contempt for his character.
Joel Schumacher does have talent, buried somewhere, (Lost Boys, Time To Kill) , but we have also seen some of the worst films come from his directorial vision of all time (Batman & Robin), this complete and utter piece of rubbish deserves to be consigned to the rubbish heap as soon as possible.
With Performances ranging from the completely bored (Nic Cage) to the totally bewildering (Peter Stormare) this film only has a couple of redeeming features, in that there are a couple of nice set pieces, and the only real redeeming feature of this film, why thats obvious the end credits !Will someone please contact the alien race that kidnapped the real Joel Schumacher, and tell then to send him back and take this horrible derivative clone of a joke away with them before he makes another film this bad.
