"eXcellent....eXhilaring....eXciting...and then it had to end..."
Hugh Jackman naked! Need I say more for the ladies. This movie picks up exactly where the first one left off. There was no boring rehash or explanation, I greatly appreciated that. They jumped or should I say teleported right into the meat of the story. Okay an action flick that started with action now we're going somewhere…or so I thought. The prodigal mutant, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) comes back from his trek. Rogue (Anna Paquin) gets her first kiss with Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) in what could be a commercial for icy cool gum. Storm (Halle Berry) and Jean (Famke Janssen) get new snazzy haircuts and the whole gang gets new nifty leather outfits since the first damn movie made so much money they upped the budget especially in the wardrobe department.
Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) is still up to her old tricks of impersonating others and trying to free Magneto (Ian Mckellen) from his plastic prison.
Ohh Ahh and we've got the new players:
STRYKER (Brian Cox) an Army General and old acquaintance of Xavier who has mysterious ties to Wolverine and at one time had a mutant son.
NIGHTCRAWLER (Alan Cumming) another blue hued mutant whose main powers are teleportation and his faith.
LADY DEATH STRIKE (Kelly Hu) a Wolverinesque mutant who is Stryker’s personal secretary and towards the end of the movie she clashes claws with Wolverine in a slice n’ dice all you can eat buffet. In which you wonder how will it end, as they both have healing powers…trust me it ends…oh does it end…
So la de dah – all goes well as the mutants UNITE (hello that’s the name of the movie) to work against STRYKER until Magneto decides to go off on his tangent of extinguishing all the humans and taking X-Men errrr Kid-In-Training Pyro (Aaron Stanford) with him to his lair of doom and thereby setting up the beginning of Ménage Au X-Men 3 or what WB will just probably call X-Men 3. Somehow I think my title would attract more people, but hey to each his own.
My one major complaint was towards the end. Now without giving too much away – because I hate reviews that do that. There is a major plot point that involves water and it threatens the lives of everyone and it comes down to a situation of will they or won’t they make it out alive. Now Iceman X-Men/Kid-In-Training has powers dealing with water. That’s right dealing with water, he can turn it to ice. Now super mutant smart people who run the Xavier school for the gifted. Don’t you think you’d let the person that has powers dealing with water, use them? That’s what common sense would tell you. But NO – this is where the writers throw common sense right out the window and thereby flushing the ending right down the toilet in my eyes.I still (hours later) cannot believe they didn’t use the mutant that has powers dealing with water. I can understand not wanting one of the X-Kids to fix the whole thing, but at least let him help….By golly water is his thing, that’s when he works his mojo mutant powers. So for that reason I have to knock off a few stars ~ otherwise this movie would of got an Awesome rating. I will be very interested to see if there is an alternate ending on the dvd or if that was the plan (albeit stupid in my eyes) from the beginning.
