The movie focused more on the love story of Winston and Julia (fucking Winston, man. How many people owe their secret identity to this book?) than on Winston's search for truth. Not a bad thing but such a limited focus misses some pretty tasty meat. It was more gut wrenching to READ about what happened to him than it was to watch it.The Eurythimics made the original soundtrack that was later scrapped. They released the album anyway and I recommend it as some of their better work.
If you haven't the inclination to read the book and want to just know what all the fuss is about ...
Big Brother Five Minute Hate 2+2=5
1984 is about how one person can know the truth about everything but be forced to profess a lie because there is just no room for truth in a world where the minister of propaganda (the minister of propaganda ... god I love this book) controls the past, present and future by manipulating the populace's perception of reality. Humans are subject to a world of controlled information and the official version of reality is just a convenient way to organize the proletariats. The less they know about how the world really works, the better. You'll only see this movie if you like the book and then you'll probably be disappointed. The roughness, browns and greys reproduce the sentiment Orwell created. 1984 the movie is a dark and edgy romantic thriller that ends in either tragedy or bliss depending on how you interpret Winston's numb acceptance of the truth that everyone would think is a lie.
